3-D Curriculum
3-D Curriculum
Principles of PRIDE 3-D is a holistic prevention education curriculum designed for girls ages 13-19. Formerly known as “P.R.I.D.E.” the curriculum was developed in 1998 for use in the Demoiselle 2 Femme “Young Ladies to Women” program and has undergone several modifications since that time. 3-D utilizes a five-point principle series (Power Respect Intelligence Desirable Endurance) which is designed to motivate girls to succeed in every area of their life. The curriculum provides (40) interactive workshop sessions which are implemented using a positive youth development model.
The holistic approach of the curriculum challenges students to avoid sexual risk behaviors while also addressing the at-risk behaviors of violence, alcohol, tobacco and drug usage. Young ladies are challenged through a Respect series which addresses sexual assault, domestic violence, teen pregnancy, and the media influence. In addition to prevention messages, young ladies also receive engaging sessions which promote positive peer and parenting relationships, decision making, self-worth, address the non-verbal messages of clothing, social etiquette, friendship, intimacy, marriage, and so much more. The curriculum includes an introduction which describes the “best practices learned from program implementation, handouts for all sessions, more than 30 teaching activities, a Games and Resource section. The workshop sessions can also be modified for classroom-based prevention education.
Cultural Competence: The 3-D Curriculum provides the unique opportunity for users to infuse their own cultural diversity within the workshop sessions. Users customize information within the curriculum to meet the cultural influence or diversity of their group. Cultural competency will be greatly influenced by the demographics of the target group, as well as the facilitator’s knowledge and ability to address cultural issues, norms and values within the target community.
Age-Appropriateness: The 3-D Curriculum is most appropriate for girls ages 13 and up. Due to the mature nature of the information, some workshop sessions may not be suitable for younger groups, depending on the community. Sessions however may be modified to meet the specific needs of the target group.
Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework of the program intervention draws upon three theories: The Ecological Systems Theory, The Theory of Reasoned Action and the Empowerment Theory. The primary goal of the approach and its use of behavioral change theories is to shift from a problem-centered model aimed at attacking negative youth behaviors to strategies that emphasize the provision of family school and community resources that support healthy decision making during adolescence.
